The LED display board is the mainstream of today's outdoor displays due to its high brightness, high chromaticity, and it could arbitrarily combined many resolutions and sizes. These technologies and characteristics have been developed through the cooperation of LED upstream and downstream industries in 20 years.

The development process can be divided into three stages:

  • The first stage is to improve the brightness of the LED display
  • The second stage is the increase of color and the improvement of chromaticity.
  • The third stage pursues the improvement of display resolution and the feasibility of trying large-size LED TVs.

If the LED display board system increases the resolution of the display under the same dot pitch condition, it means that the display area is increased.A high-resolution LED display board (taking 720P resolution 720(H) x 1280(W) as an example), at the most common point distance of 25mm, the size of the whole board will be as high as 18m*32m. Although the huge display board looks spectacular, it will also restrict its usage and applications.

The only way to remain the high resolution and reduce the display size is to apply and conduct the design of small LED dot pitch.

How to reduce the display unit of the LED board and let the control components integrated at a higher density, and how to solve the problems of power supply and heat dissipation at the same time are the rigorous challenges faced by the new generation of LED display board. We can say that the fourth stage of development of LED display is to shrink the dot pitch and design into a very small space.

In 2009, Formolight officially challenged the fourth stage of the LED display board. We wanted to make the high-quality micro LED display board with the smallest dot pitch in the world at that time.

Formolight planned to significantly reduce the LED dot pitch to 2.8mm. The display area of high-definition LED board will only be 1.25% of the previously mentioned one: 2.016m(H) x 3.584(W)m, which is equivalent to an 160 inch TV. A LED display board of this size can be used anywhere in the house and outdoors. It just likes a high-definition TV, and we can even call it “LED-TV”.

In order to reduce the dot pitch of the LED board, the key components are the extremely small LED and the driver IC, and the key technology is the high-density circuit, power supply and heat dissipation design on the PCB. Formolight has many years of experience in the LED display system. Based on the capability to combine the breakthrough technology of packaging application and the new component and circuit design for heat dissipation and system integration, Formolight has successfully launched the high-definition LED-TV which was highly appreciated by the Minister-Mr. Wan Gang from China Association for Science and Technology at that time. It was really worthy to receive such honor of "Taiwan’s Light".

(Remark: Small-pitch LED display system, in recent years – especially in mainland China has been developed rapidly, and there are already P1.6 products in the market. Formolight continues to develop intensively on technology and has provided P1.2 (1.2mm) prototype products already. Although the Micro LED is the future trend, the low yield rate still elevates the production cost at the current stage. Formolight will pay close attention to the maturity of the technology in the overall market and try to introduce first Mini LED products to progress towards the trend of global Micro / Mini LED product.)
